The last six mills in the northeast stopped buying wood in November 2025. This is a big deal because winter is the busiest time for these workers. Mental health is a big concern. Workers are facing serious challenges. But talking about it is still taboo in their communities. Organizations are trying to help. They are partnering with groups like UMaine Cooperative Extension's Maine AgrAbility and NAMI Maine. These groups provide safety training and mental health services. But getting people to use these services is hard. There are issues with accessibility and stigma.Dairy farmers and fishermen are also struggling. Many have put their personal homes on the line. If they lose their jobs, they lose everything. The Maine Mobile Health Program is trying to help. They provide on-site support. This includes medical, behavioral, dental, vision, and specialty care. They also offer screenings for PFAS, blood pressure, BMI, depression, and anxiety. The program takes most insurance types. They also provide services on a sliding scale for those without insurance. The Maine AgrAbility Project is another resource. They help workers with disabilities or injuries. They provide on-site assessments and connect workers with rehabilitation and disability services. The program is a chapter of a USDA-funded network. It operates in 21 states. The key is to find solutions that work for each individual. A one-size-fits-all approach doesn't work here.
