Late on December 27, 2024, a man named Brian Steele caused a commotion at a Warren convenience store. The 46-year-old drove his car into the 7-Eleven at the intersection of 12 Mile and Schoenherr roads. This wasn't just an accident, though. Steele then entered the store armed with knives, scaring customers and employees. They quickly locked themselves in the back room for safety.
When police arrived, they found Steele covered in blood and holding two knives. He had injured himself. His girlfriend was nearby but managed to get to safety. Officers tried to calm him down, but Steele shouted, "Kill me, kill me. " The officers reassured him that no one wanted to hurt him. More police arrived and used a Taser to subdue Steele, who was then arrested without further incident.
Investigators found two serrated kitchen knives and confirmed that no one at the store was harmed. Steele was treated for his injuries at a local hospital before being taken to Warren Jail. On December 30, he was charged with several crimes, including assault with intent to rob while armed and malicious destruction of a building. Steele pleaded not guilty and was set a high bond due to his past felony convictions. He was on parole at the time of the incident.
