Managing Acalabrutinib Side Effects: Real-World Advice from French Experts

FranceSat Nov 16 2024
Acalabrutinib, a newer medication for chronic lymphocytic leukemia, is safer than older options. However, managing its side effects can be tricky. A group of French healthcare professionals—including hematologists, pharmacists, and doctors specializing in heart and skin issues—decided to find practical ways to handle these side effects. They conducted a survey, where they found that having a hospital pharmacist check for drug interactions before starting acalabrutinib is crucial. The experts also cautioned against taking certain strong medications with acalabrutinib, as they might make it work less well or cause harm. Surprisingly, they found no issues with giving acalabrutinib to patients with heart rhythm problems. They suggested regularly checking blood pressure and being careful with certain blood thinners. For dental or skin procedures, acalabrutinib should be paused. The team also warned about headaches during the first month of treatment and suggested a paracetamol-caffeine combo to manage them. This study shows how teamwork can improve the handling of side effects from acalabrutinib.
