Manganese Matters: Boosting Fish Growth and Health
Fri Apr 04 2025
Fish farming is big business. One key player in this industry is the Cirrhinus mrigala. This fish is popular in aquaculture due to its fast growth and adaptability. But to keep these fish healthy and growing, farmers need to pay close attention to their diet. One crucial nutrient is manganese. It's a mineral that plays a big role in fish health and growth. So, how much manganese do these fish really need?
Researchers conducted a study to find out. They tested six different diets with varying amounts of manganese. The amounts ranged from 1. 48 to 26. 15 mg per kg of feed. They then fed these diets to young Cirrhinus mrigala fish for 60 days. The fish were kept in tanks, with 15 fish per tank. Each diet was tested in three different tanks.
The results were interesting. As the manganese levels in the diet increased, so did the fish's growth and appetite. However, the feed conversion ratio, which measures how efficiently the fish turn feed into body mass, improved up to a point. It got better with increasing manganese up to 16. 35 mg/kg, but then it stopped improving. This means the fish were using the feed more efficiently up to this point, but adding more manganese didn't help.
The fish's body composition also changed with the diet. The best results were seen with 16. 35 mg/kg of manganese. At this level, the fish had the best mix of protein, fat, and other nutrients in their bodies.
Manganese levels in the fish's bodies also increased with the diet. However, the fish's bodies could only absorb so much. After 16. 35 mg/kg, adding more manganese to the diet didn't increase the amount in the fish's bodies.
The study also looked at how manganese affected the fish's health. Enzymes in the liver that are important for health increased with manganese up to 16. 35 mg/kg. But, the levels of harmful substances in the fish's bodies decreased with increasing manganese. This suggests that manganese helps keep the fish healthy.
Based on these results, the researchers suggested that Cirrhinus mrigala need between 13. 18 and 17. 22 mg/kg of manganese in their diet for the best growth and health. This is a critical finding for fish farmers. It shows that getting the right amount of manganese in the diet can make a big difference in the fish's growth and health.
However, it's important to note that this study was done under controlled conditions. Real-world fish farms might have different results due to factors like water quality, temperature, and disease. But, this study provides a good starting point for fish farmers to optimize their feed and improve their fish's health and growth.
