Many Men in Ukraine: A War They Didn't Choose

Zaporizhzhia region, UkraineFri Dec 13 2024
In September, a 45-year-old father of three was taken by force from his hometown in Ukraine to fight in the war. He was last seen trying to save his own life after an explosion, among many others who have been forced to fight a war they never wanted. The Ukrainian government has reported thousands missing, with estimates of soldiers killed ranging from 60, 000 to 100, 000. The current law requires men between 25 and 60 to serve, but some Western allies suggest lowering the age to 18. Ukraine has about 3. 7 million men of military age, yet many have left the country illegally. Those who stay face harsh penalties if they don't comply with military service. Martial law has stripped men of their freedoms, forcing them into battle despite their personal beliefs. Many soldiers feel trapped, with no willingness to fight for a corrupt system. Over the past six months, recruitment tactics have become aggressive, with reports of men being beaten and bribed. A survey shows that half of Ukrainians believe there's no shame in avoiding military service. The war has divided the country, with many civilians unwilling to fight but also opposing surrender. My nephew, who went missing in action, was never the type to rush into battle. He was scared of pain and blood, making his fate in this war even more heartbreaking.
