March Madness and the Hidden Gambling Risks
West Bloomfield, USASat Mar 22 2025
March is a big month for sports fans, but it's also a time to talk about problem gambling. This is because March Madness, a huge sports betting event, happens during Problem Gambling Awareness Month.
Since online sports betting became legal in Michigan, there's been a noticeable increase in people struggling with gambling. It's easy to start small, just for fun, but things can quickly get out of hand. Before you know it, you're trying to make up for losses, and it's hard to stop. The worst part? You can do all this from the comfort of your own home.
Chris Nixon, who runs a rehabilitation center in West Bloomfield, knows the signs. He says it's a problem when people bet more than they can afford or try to chase their losses. Online gambling can be especially risky for vulnerable people.
In the last four years, since online betting became legal, there's been a big jump in people seeking help for gambling problems. Nixon says they've seen about a 75% increase in people struggling with online gambling and sports betting.
So, what can you do if you or someone else is struggling? The first step is simple: pick up the phone and call 1-800-GAMBLER. You'll speak with a counselor who understands what you're going through.
Gambling can be exciting, but it's important to stay in control. If you're not sure if you have a problem, ask yourself these questions: Do you bet more than you can afford? Do you try to make up for losses? If you answered yes to either, it might be time to seek help. Remember, it's okay to have fun, but it's not okay to let gambling control your life.
Sports betting can be a fun way to enjoy March Madness, but it's important to be aware of the risks. If you or someone else is struggling, don't be afraid to reach out for help. You don't have to go through it alone.
