March's Wild Weather: Another Storm on the Horizon
central United States, Defiance, USATue Mar 25 2025
March has been quite the month for severe weather. It has already seen three major storms, each bringing a mix of snow, high winds, and tornadoes. These storms have left a mark, with over 220 tornadoes and nearly 1, 900 incidents of high winds and hail. This is almost double the severe weather incidents compared to March 2024 and includes nearly four times the number of tornadoes. The storm from March 14-16 alone caused more severe weather incidents than the entire month of March 2024. It seems like this month is trending towards having significantly more severe weather incidents, including tornadoes.
Now, another storm is brewing over the central United States. This storm will bring flooding rain and drought relief to parts of Texas from Thursday to Friday. However, it will also compete with a larger storm system building to the west. This larger storm could bring severe weather to over a dozen states on Sunday. The risks include damaging wind gusts, large hail, and even tornadoes. Depending on the storm's path, these risks could extend into Monday for some areas in the East.
In the southwestern part of the storm's path, strong wind gusts could kick up dust and increase the risk of wildfires. This is expected over portions of the southern High Plains, where rain from the storm on Thursday and Friday, as well as any rain from the new storm on Saturday, may not reach. Meanwhile, farther north, a swath of snow and wintry mix is expected. This wintry precipitation could extend from central Colorado and eastern Wyoming to parts of the Dakotas, Minnesota, and the northern parts of Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, and New England.
This month's weather pattern is unusual, with severe weather incidents happening more frequently than in previous years. It's a reminder of how unpredictable and powerful nature can be. It's important for people in these areas to stay informed and prepared. The weather can change quickly, and being ready can make a big difference in staying safe.
