Marvel's New Team Takes On Summer
North America, USAWed Apr 30 2025
The summer movie season is about to get a jolt with the release of Thunderbolts. This film is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and it features a group of characters who aren't as famous as some of the other Marvel heroes. The movie is directed by Jake Schreier and it follows a team of misfits who find their inner heroes when they work together.
The movie is set to open with a domestic range of 70 to 73 million dollars and a global range of 160 to 175 million dollars. This might seem low for a Marvel film, but things have changed since the pandemic. The studio is also highlighting that these aren't well-known characters, which could impact the opening numbers.
The box office has seen a surprising boost lately, thanks to films like Sinners. This shows that people are eager to return to theaters for a shared movie experience. Just a few weeks ago, the year-to-date box office revenue was behind 2024's pace, but it's now up by more than 11 percent.
Thunderbolts features a star-studded cast, including Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, and Wyatt Russell. The film has been praised for its fresh take on the Marvel genre and its heartfelt storytelling. The Hollywood Reporter's chief critic, David Rooney, noted that the film offers a soulful adventure with a unique ensemble cast.
The movie also tackles important themes, such as mental health. One of the characters, Bob, struggles with a mental illness that has severe consequences after he undergoes cruel experiments. The team comes together in response to this and to avoid a dangerous setup by the villainous Valentine Allegra de Fontaine.
As of now, the film has a promising critics score of 89 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. This is a good sign, but it's important to remember that scores can change. For comparison, Captain America: Brave New World had a lower score but still opened strongly. Last year, The Fall Guy kicked off the summer box office with 28. 5 million dollars.
The movie begins previews in North America on Thursday night and opens everywhere on Friday. Overseas, it opens midweek in various countries, including China. This wide release could help the film reach a global audience quickly.
