Maryland is shaking things up! The state is looking for a fresh, modern office space for the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). This isn't just about a new address. It's about giving educators a better workspace and saving money.
The current building, the Nancy S. Gransmick Building, is old. It hasn't had a major upgrade since the 1970s. That's like using a flip phone in the age of smartphones! The building is outdated and doesn't meet the needs of today's workforce.
Moving to a new space is a smart move. It will save the state a lot of money. Fixing up the old building would cost nearly $100 million. But moving to a leased space in downtown Baltimore will save $37 million over 20 years. That's a big win for Maryland!
The new office will be about 97, 000 square feet. It will house around 760 workers. The move is expected to take about two years. But the planning process will start in the next six months.
This move is part of a bigger plan. The goal is to modernize state government and help underserved neighborhoods. It's a step towards a better future for Maryland.
