Maryland's weather flip: sunshine in the morning, storms by evening

Maryland started the day with clear skies and temperatures climbing to a comfortable 70°F by noon. The pleasant morning made it ideal for outdoor tasks or quick errands before the weather turned. But after 3 p. m. , a cold front sweeping in from the west brought changing conditions, kicking off a series of rain showers and thunderstorms that lasted through midnight.
Winds picked up ahead of the front, gusting between 15 to 25 mph from the southwest. This pushed temperatures higher in the afternoon, but the real change came as the storms rolled in. The first round of rain around 4 p. m. was light, but later waves brought stronger gusts, heavy downpours, and occasional lightning. The worst of it stayed west of Baltimore, so damage was minimal. Rainfall stayed light too, mostly between a quarter and half an inch.
Thursday felt like a sharp contrast—gray, windy, and unusually cool. Temperatures struggled to reach the upper 50s and 60s, with occasional sprinkles adding to the gloomy vibe. Winds from the northwest kept things breezy and raw, making it feel more like fall than late spring.
The weekend brought a welcome break. Friday stayed dry with a mix of sun and clouds, temperatures in the low 70s, and a refreshing breeze. Saturday, the day of the Preakness, stayed mostly dry and warm, reaching the lower 80s. A stray shower might have popped up west of the city, but it didn’t last long.
Sunday heated up even more, pushing into the mid to upper 80s. A few isolated storms could have popped up, but most areas stayed dry. Early next week, though, a real heatwave arrived. Monday hit the upper 80s in Baltimore, but areas north and west reached the lower 90s. Tuesday brought more heat, this time with noticeable humidity, making it feel even hotter.
The pattern suggests relief is on the way. By late next week, storms could break the heat, bringing temperatures back to normal. Until then, Marylanders will need to adjust to the swings—sunny mornings, stormy nights, and a mix of cool and scorching days.
