Massachusetts Health Milestone and Gubernatorial Debate Sparks Local Buzz

Boston, Massachusetts, USASun Apr 12 2026
The state’s health insurance landmark will be highlighted on Monday at Boston’s historic Faneuil Hall, where former governors and current leaders gather to mark twenty years since the 2006 law that brought coverage to nearly all residents. The gathering will feature speeches from Gov. Maura Healey and her former colleagues—Michael Dukakis, Bill Weld, Deval Patrick, and Mitt Romney—who originally signed the bill into law. Their presence underscores how a collaborative effort across administrations shaped today’s health system. Former Gov. Charlie Baker, now heading the NCAA, will be absent; his reasons remain unclear. Other notable attendees include House Speaker Ron Mariano, former House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi, former Senate President Robert Travaglini, ex‑CMS administrator Chiquita Brooks‑LaSure, and Health Connector director Audrey Morse Gasteier. The program will mix remarks from lawmakers with panels featuring business, healthcare, and community voices discussing the partnership that enabled the law’s passage and its ongoing impact.
Healey’s office noted that before the act, about ten percent of Massachusetts residents lacked insurance. Today the state boasts over 97 percent coverage, topping national averages. Participants will share personal stories from Health Connector enrollees and navigators to illustrate how the policy changed lives across the Commonwealth. Meanwhile, New Bedford is set for a different kind of political showdown. Republican gubernatorial hopefuls Brian Shortsleeve and Mike Kennealy will debate at Kilburn Mill, while fellow candidate Mike Minogue has declined. The two challengers criticize Minogue for missing the discussion, arguing that a candidate should engage with voters directly. Minogue’s team counters that he will join the trio on Monday for a forum, claiming debates will occur later. The debate will air live from 2:00 to 3:30 p. m. on the local news outlets’ Facebook pages, offering residents a chance to hear contrasting viewpoints ahead of the upcoming election.
