Mauer’s Take on MLB’s New Challenge Tech

United States, St. PaulThu May 21 2026
Joe Mauer, the former Twins star who now lives in St. Paul, says he likes Major League Baseball’s new automated challenge system (ABS). He thinks the goal is to get every call right, and he says ABS helps reach that aim. “I actually really like it, ” Mauer told a Fox News interview. “The technology has gotten to a point where the challenges are pretty quick and resolved pretty quickly. That’s what we want: to get the call right. ” Mauer praises MLB for adding ABS as part of a broader effort to improve the game. He believes the league is always looking for ways to make baseball better, and he says this rule change is a good step. He played both offense and defense for the Twins, so he knows how useful accurate calls can be.
During his 15‑year career with the Twins, Mauer hit . 306 and collected 143 home runs and 923 RBIs. After retiring in 2018, he started playing in the American Century Championship golf tournament each year. The event raises more than $8 million for charities, including a 40‑percent donation to the Stowers Institute for Medical Research. Mauer admits his golf skills aren’t perfect, but he says that doesn’t matter when he’s on the course. “American Century brings good people together and it feels like a week on the tour, ” he said. The tournament will air on NBC and Peacock, giving fans a chance to see former baseball stars try their hand at golf.
