A child from Long Island was diagnosed with measles. This was a wake-up call for health officials in Suffolk County. They quickly sprang into action, teaming up with Cohen Children’s Medical Center to stop the virus from spreading. The hospital identified 12 Suffolk County residents who might have been exposed to measles between March 3 and 6. Most of them had been vaccinated, but one child was too young to receive the vaccine and had to be quarantined. This child was not the only one too young to be vaccinated. The child who was diagnosed with measles was also too young to receive the vaccine. This isn't the first time measles has made an appearance in New York this year. There have been three cases so far. This is a big deal because outbreaks are happening in other states like Texas and New Mexico. Health officials are urging everyone to get their measles vaccines on time. This is especially important for protecting the youngest and most vulnerable people in the community. The U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has clear guidelines for measles vaccinations. Children should get their first dose of the MMR vaccine between 12 and 15 months and a second dose between 4 and 6 years old, before starting school. However, only about 81% of children in New York have received their first doses by the age of 2. This is a concern because it means that a significant number of children are not protected against measles. Two infants in New York City under 12 months old contracted the virus earlier this year. This highlights the importance of vaccination for preventing the spread of measles. New York City had 14 measles cases last year. New Jersey also reported three measles cases last month, but health officials have since confirmed that there is no ongoing transmission in the state. The situation in Suffolk County serves as a reminder that measles is still a threat. It's crucial for everyone to stay up-to-date on their vaccinations to protect themselves and others. This is especially important for young children who are too young to be vaccinated and rely on herd immunity for protection. Vaccination is the best way to prevent the spread of measles and keep the community safe.
