Measles Alert in Weld County: One New Case Sparks Vaccination Reminder
Colorado, Fort Collins, USAWed Apr 15 2026
A new measles case has been confirmed in Weld County, bringing attention to the importance of vaccination.
An adult who had not received the measles vaccine was a close contact of someone already infected in Weld County.
On Monday afternoon, this person visited two medical facilities in Larimer County: a primary care office and an emergency department.
The first visit was from 3:15 to 5:20 p. m. , and the second spanned 3:35 to 6:10 p. m.
Because measles can linger in the air for up to two hours, these times overlap and create a higher risk of spread.
If someone is exposed, getting the vaccine within 72 hours can cut the chance of becoming sick.
After that window, an antibody treatment may still help, but its effectiveness fades as days go by.
The standard two‑dose vaccine is about 97 % effective when given at least two weeks before exposure.
People who were in contact on Monday may start showing symptoms anytime up to May 4.
Early signs include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a rash that appears around the hairline after about four days.
If symptoms develop, it is crucial to call ahead before visiting a clinic or hospital.
This helps staff take precautions and protect other patients from catching the virus.
The state health department usually asks unvaccinated individuals who have been exposed to stay home for 21 days.
The new case is the fifth confirmed in Weld County this year and brings the total for Colorado to 16.
Health officials urge anyone at risk to consider vaccination or post‑exposure prophylaxis as soon as possible.
