Measles Alert: Second Case Spreads in Saluda County

South Carolina, USATue May 05 2026
South Carolina’s health officials reported a new measles infection in Saluda County, linking it to the first case that appeared on April 17. The two incidents are separate from a larger outbreak in the Upstate area that ended on April 26 after nearly a thousand cases. The initial patient had traveled abroad, while the latest case came from someone who had been in close contact with the first patient and was already under quarantine when symptoms began. The health department does not know if this person had been vaccinated, and they have not exposed anyone in public settings.
At present, no one is isolating, but 39 residents remain in quarantine until May 9. A deputy director of the department explained that the new case emerged from the same exposure chain as the first, and the patient had been in quarantine before showing symptoms. Across the United States, 1, 814 measles cases have been confirmed this year as of April 30, according to national health authorities. The best protection against measles is vaccination. The state encourages people to get vaccinated through doctors, pharmacies, or local health departments.
