Measles Makes a Comeback in the Americas: What's Going Wrong?

CanadaMon Oct 06 2025
The Americas might soon lose its measles-free status. This is because cases are popping up in Canada, Mexico, and the U. S. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is worried. To keep the measles-free title, these countries must have zero cases within a year. But time is running out. Vaccination rates are dropping. This is the main reason for the measles comeback. PAHO's leader, Dr. Jarbas Barbosa, says accurate info is key. He stresses that vaccines do not cause autism. This myth has been debunked many times. Canada has seen over 5, 000 cases this year, with two deaths. The U. S. and Mexico also have thousands of cases. The Americas only got its measles-free status back in 2024. Losing it now would be a big step back. PAHO says 95% of people need to be vaccinated to stop measles. But in Canada, only 92% have had the first dose. Just 79% have had the second dose. This is not enough to prevent outbreaks. Meanwhile, Gavi, a group that funds vaccines in poorer countries, plans big campaigns. They will work with Nigeria, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. But Gavi is facing budget cuts. The U. S. is even cutting its funding entirely.
