The US is facing a significant measles resurgence in 2025. Just three months into the year, over 300 cases have been confirmed. This is the highest number of cases since 2019. The outbreak started in West Texas, where vaccination rates are low. It has since spread to neighboring states, including New Mexico and Oklahoma. Texas is the epicenter of the outbreak, with 259 confirmed cases across 11 counties. Sadly, this has led to 34 hospitalizations and one death. The victim was a 6-year-old girl who had not been vaccinated. New Mexico has reported 35 cases across two counties, with two hospitalizations and one death. The deceased was an unvaccinated adult who did not seek medical treatment. Oklahoma has two probable cases linked to the outbreak. Beyond the initial outbreak, 12 other states have reported at least one confirmed case. These states are Alaska, California, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified three separate measles outbreaks this year. An outbreak is defined as three or more related cases.
Measles was declared eliminated in the US in 2000, thanks to widespread vaccination efforts. However, recent years have seen a rise in cases. In 2014, there were 667 cases. In 2018, the number was 381. The highest number of cases in recent years was in 2019, with 1, 274 cases. This was largely due to major outbreaks in New York. Measles is considered eliminated if there is no continuous spread in the country for at least 12 months. This is different from eradication, which means the disease is completely gone worldwide. Only smallpox and rinderpest have been eradicated. The resurgence of measles raises important questions about vaccination rates and public health policies. It's crucial to understand that measles can be prevented through vaccination. The current outbreak highlights the importance of maintaining high vaccination rates to protect communities from preventable diseases. It's a reminder that public health is a shared responsibility.
