Utah is facing a growing measles outbreak, with two more people, including a child, recently diagnosed. This brings the total number of confirmed cases to five. The unvaccinated individuals, from Utah County and southern Utah, have raised concerns among health officials. Two of the infected are pregnant, highlighting the serious risks measles poses to expectant mothers and their babies.
Dr. Leisha Nolen, Utah's state epidemiologist, expressed worry about the situation. She noted that two of the infected individuals required hospitalization, which is a red flag. The health department expects more cases to emerge, as they are aware of more potential exposures. Despite 90% of Utahns being vaccinated, there are pockets of unvaccinated individuals, particularly in southern Utah, which increases the risk of further spread.
Measles symptoms usually appear within one to two weeks after exposure. They include high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a distinctive rash that starts at the hairline and spreads. Health officials urge anyone experiencing these symptoms to stay home and contact their healthcare provider before visiting a clinic to prevent further transmission.
The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is highly effective, with a 97% success rate after two doses. The health department recommends that anyone planning to become pregnant get vaccinated to protect themselves and their baby. Infants, who cannot yet be vaccinated, are particularly vulnerable, so it's crucial for those who can get the vaccine to do so.
The state has been preparing for this outbreak, working with healthcare providers to post symptoms and provide alternative entrances to minimize exposure. Nationwide, measles cases are also on the rise, with 1, 227 confirmed cases in 37 states. It's a stark reminder of the importance of vaccination and vigilance in protecting public health.
