Mon Feb 10 2025
The way Germany pictures Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, in the media is influenced by a lot of different factors. This portrayal isn't just about words; it's about how language and communication tactics shape the image. Put simply, media in Germany is using these methods to show their opinion on what’s happening in Russia and Ukraine.
To understand this, we need to look at how Germany’s political media discusses Putin. We need to ask: What tools do they use to create this image? And what does this image say about their relationship with Russia? The goal is to understand the tactics that shape Putin’s media presence and what that means right now.
There are 17 main ways Germany’s media shapes this image. It’s not just about what they say, but how they say it. These tactics are used in 80 different situations to make sure the message gets across. The media’s tactics reveal a lot about Germany’s feelings towards Putin and Russia.
The language Germany uses is not very friendly. The media often portrays Putin negatively, distrustfully. The goal seems to be to discourage any support for Russia or its president. They use a mix of techniques to sway public opinion. This is not new, but it’s something to think about.

To get a better idea of what’s going on, Germany’s media often uses documentaries. These documentaries are filled with different perspectives, some of which are about how to form an image of Putin. They use the documentary “Putin – Der gefährliche Despot” as an ideal example. This documentary gives us a glimpse into how Germany portrays Putin.
These findings are based on research done by N. B. Ruzhentseva and O. L. Mikhaleva. They created a guide on how to analyse the media’s language. This guide looks at how to use language to form a picture of someone.
Germany's media uses specific methods to communicate their views. These methods include constant monitoring, detailed analysis of what’s being said, and looking at the situation from different points of view. They also use numbers to back up their claims. This makes their message stronger and more impactful.
What does all of this mean? It means that Germany’s media is actively shaping the image of Russia’s president. They use a variety of methods to do this, and their message is clear: they don’t trust Russia. This isn’t a new tactic, but it’s important to understand how it works.
