Medical Schools Under Scrutiny for Possible Race‑Based Admissions

Washington, USAFri Jun 05 2026
The U. S. Justice Department has started investigations into 15 medical schools. It wants to see if these schools are using race unfairly when choosing students. The probes focus on how the schools treat applicants from different backgrounds. Each of the institutions gets large amounts of federal money, so they must follow rules set by a Supreme Court ruling. That ruling says colleges cannot favor or disadvantage people based on race in their admissions.
The department did not name the schools that are being examined. Earlier investigations looked at Yale and UCLA. Those cases showed a preference for Black and Hispanic applicants in the admissions process. The new investigations will check if similar patterns exist elsewhere. If they find violations, the schools could face penalties or changes to how they admit students. The goal is to ensure that medical school admissions are fair and equal for everyone, no matter their race.
