Medicare Drug Price Talks: What's the Real Deal?
USAWed Nov 26 2025
The Trump administration has struck deals with drug companies to lower Medicare prices for 15 medications. These deals are part of a program that started under President Biden. The goal is to save money for both taxpayers and seniors. However, the actual savings for individuals will vary based on their specific Medicare plans and prescription costs.
The drugs involved in these negotiations include popular ones like Ozempic, Rybelsus, and Wegovy for diabetes and weight loss. Other medications treat conditions like asthma, arthritis, and cancer. The new prices will take effect in 2027. This is the second round of negotiations, bringing the total number of drugs with negotiated prices to 25.
The administration claims these deals will save about $8. 5 billion if they had been in effect last year. However, the exact savings for Medicare beneficiaries when buying drugs at the pharmacy is still unclear. A new rule this year caps out-of-pocket drug costs at $2, 000, which should help some seniors.
One issue is that Medicare still doesn't cover weight-loss drugs for obesity. But a recent deal includes a pilot program to expand coverage for high-risk individuals. The administration has also made other deals to lower drug costs for the general population.
Drug companies are not happy about these negotiations. They argue that government price setting will hurt medical innovation and the economy. Next year, Medicare will negotiate prices for another 15 drugs, including those given by doctors.
