Both his parents, Massar and Marie Sarr, are from Senegal and were professional basketball players. His father Massar played professionally and passed on his love for the game to Alex and his older brother, Olivier. Olivier, also a professional basketball player, has a two-way deal with the Oklahoma City Thunder. Both siblings started playing basketball at a young age, guided by their father.
