In the heart of South Carolina, a dad's creative response to his son's dinosaur request has turned into a powerful symbol for breast cancer awareness. Chris Price, a local artist and handyman, started this journey in 2022 when his son Fowler asked for a dinosaur sculpture. The result was Lex, a 20-foot-long, 10-foot-tall T-Rex that has since been painted in various colors for different holidays. In 2024, Chris decided to paint Lex pink to raise awareness for breast cancer.
Chris was inspired by his client, Nancy Padgett, who has been fighting breast cancer for nearly 40 years. Nancy's strength and resilience touched Chris deeply, motivating him to use Lex as a platform to support her and others. The sculpture is now a fundraising tool for the American Cancer Society, and anyone passing by can write the name of a loved one affected by breast cancer on Lex.
The idea to paint Lex pink came from Nancy's daughter, Ashton Padgett, who shared her mom's battle with Chris. Ashton is proud of her mom's strength and perseverance, and she's glad others can see that too. The fundraiser will run until November 14, 2024, with a goal of raising $2, 500. As of October 30, 2024, about $200 has been raised.
