Meet Mario Barrios: A Boxer with a Tough Upbringing and Big Dreams

Mario Barrios, aka 'El Azteca', is a boxer who's seen his share of challenges. Born in San Antonio, Texas, his American-Mexican heritage is a big part of who he is. Growing up, he was surrounded by Mexican immigrants, which shaped his boxing style. His childhood wasn't easy. When he was just 7 weeks old, his father was jailed for murdering his older sister. He was raised by his mom and grandma, who got him into boxing to channel his anger. Now, as a 29-year-old WBC Interim Welterweight Champion, he's ready for his biggest fight yet against Abel Ramos. Barrios says his upbringing made him strong. He forgave his father, guided by his religion, believed to be Christian. His culture and heritage drive him in and out of the ring. He's proud of his heritage and wants to make his community proud.
