Brewing kombucha at home can be messy and complicated. But a new gadget from San Francisco startup Kombu aims to change that. The Fermenstation is a modern, compact kombucha brewer that simplifies the process. Founded by husband and wife team Michael Churchill and Natalia Amijo, Kombu was born out of a desire for a better-looking, more efficient homebrew setup. Traditional kombucha brewing involves multiple steps and equipment that take up kitchen space. The Fermenstation streamlines this, combining all essential steps into one device. It maintains a stable temperature, making fermentation more predictable, and reduces the risk of contamination with a sealed, sterile environment. The device also includes a companion app for remote control and monitoring. Kombu launched The Fermenstation via a Kickstarter campaign in August 2024, exceeding their goal of $25, 000. Special launch pricing is $360, with a suggested retail price of $500. Despite the upfront cost, the device can save money in the long run by reducing the need to buy expensive store-bought kombucha. Kombu plans to expand their product line to include more fermented foods and accessories. Their goal is to make the benefits of fermented foods accessible to everyone.
