Mental Health in the Workforce: Who's Struggling the Most?

AustraliaSun Dec 22 2024
You might think that the type of work you do affects how mentally tough you are. But guess what? Age and gender play a much bigger role than the industry you work in. A recent study with over 5, 000 workers from all over Australia found some interesting things. First off, young adults, those between 18 and 29, are really feeling the pressure. They're almost three times more likely to be stressed out compared to their older colleagues. On the other hand, women also face a higher risk, being about 1. 5 times more likely to experience mental strain than men. When it comes to the industry you're in, it doesn't seem to make a difference in the level of distress once you take age and gender into account. Isn't that surprising? But here's where it gets serious: those who are highly or very highly distressed miss out on about 21 extra workdays due to mental health issues each year. That's a lot of lost productivity! So, what can we do about it? Workplaces need to step up and create tailored programs to support the young adults and women who are struggling the most. This way, we can build a stronger, healthier workforce for the future.
