Metaflammation: The Hidden Link Between Heart and Hormone Health

Scientists have found that a special kind of inflammation, called metaflammation, connects heart problems with hormone disorders. This new view helps explain why people with diabetes often also get heart disease.
Researchers searched medical databases for papers from 2010 to 2024. They found over two hundred studies, but only a little more than a hundred were useful for this review. Those papers covered topics such as fat tissue inflammation, gut bacteria changes, immune system triggers, and damage to cell powerhouses called mitochondria.
One common theme is that fat around the belly releases harmful signals. These signals activate inflammasomes—tiny protein machines that start inflammation—and create extra oxidative stress in mitochondria. This chain of events appears in both heart disease and hormone disorders.
Doctors can spot these problems using blood markers. Common tests include IL‑6, C‑reactive protein (CRP), GlycA, and tiny cell packages called exosomes. These markers tell patients how serious their disease might be.
Some medicines already work on both problems at once. Drugs that block SGLT2 or mimic GLP‑1 help control blood sugar and also protect the heart. New treatments targeting IL‑1β are also promising.
Changing lifestyle is another powerful tool. Eating a Mediterranean diet, fixing gut bacteria with probiotics, and doing intermittent fasting can lower inflammation in both the heart and endocrine system.
However, turning these discoveries into everyday care is still hard. Many studies lack standard tests and do not include people from all backgrounds. Cutting‑edge tools like organ‑on‑chip models and stem‑cell organs could give clearer answers.
Future research should blend detailed inflammation testing, combined heart‑and‑hormone outcome measures, and patient goals. This approach could reduce the worldwide impact of cardio‑endocrine diseases.
