Meta, the company behind Facebook, recently decided to end its fact-checking partnerships. This shocked the journalists involved and could leave some jobless. Fact-checking is under fire from certain politicians and groups, especially those on the right. They often accuse fact-checkers of hiding uncomfortable truths. Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, fueled this idea by saying fact-checkers are biased and have damaged trust. However, he didn’t specify who lost trust. President-elect Donald Trump and pro-Trump media welcomed this change. Some of Trump’s supporters saw fact-checking as censorship and trusted Trump more than fact-checkers.
Fact-checking sites might shut down without Meta’s financial support. Jesse Stiller from Check Your Fact said this move will hurt discussion and dialogue. Alan Duke from Lead Stories was also surprised and disagreed with Zuckerberg’s bias claim. He said without fact-checking, misinformation will spread like before 2016 when false stories dominated social media. The initiative to label false posts and downrank them wasn’t perfect. But it helped reduce misinformation. Experts say without fact-checking, users will struggle to find reliable information. Meta wants to use a community notes system where unpaid users fact-check content. However, experts worry this won’t work for complex topics and could be biased.
