Mexico City Study Tracks Health Over Two Decades

Mexico City,Fri Sep 25 2026

The Mexico City Prospective Study started back in the late 1990s. Its main goal is to figure out why illnesses spread everywhere. Scientists want to learn how different communities and environments affect health risks. This massive project watches roughly 150,000 adults living in Mexico City.

The study has followed its participants for more than twenty years. They take blood tests and keep track of who gets sick. Some people even answer surveys again when they survive. All the data is free for open research. Mexican researchers get special treatment, and folks from lower-income nations can access it without cost.

A major surprise came from looking at body weight and sugar levels. Obesity and diabetes are very common in this group. Even more shocking: diabetes hurts people much more here than in wealthy countries. Nearly one-third of deaths between ages 35 and 74 are linked to diabetes. Those numbers pushed the government to change its disease prevention plans fast.
