Mexico's Struggle Against Women's Killings: Laws Fall Short
MexicoMon Aug 11 2025
Mexico made big moves to protect women. They introduced laws against femicide, changed divorce rules, and made abortion safer. But did these changes make a difference? Not really. Despite all these efforts, women in Mexico are still being killed at alarming rates.
The idea was simple. Make femicide a serious crime. Punish it heavily. But when researchers looked at the numbers, they found no drop in women's deaths. Not in murders, not in disappearances, not even in suicides. The laws just didn't work.
Why? Maybe because the laws aren't being enforced. Or maybe because the problem is deeper than laws can fix. Whatever the reason, the result is the same. Women are still dying.
Divorce laws were also changed. Now, women can leave bad marriages more easily. But did this help? Again, the numbers say no. Women are still at risk. Even when abortion was decriminalized, it didn't stop the violence.
So, what's the answer? Maybe laws alone aren't enough. Maybe we need to look at the bigger picture. At the culture. At the society. At the system that lets this happen.
