MGUS and High Calcium Levels: What You Need to Know
IcelandFri Dec 20 2024
You've just found out you have MGUS, a blood condition where proteins aren't acting like they should. Oh, and your doctor says your calcium levels are high? Don't panic just yet. A big study from Iceland, called iStopMM, dug into this exact situation. Out of 2, 546 people with MGUS, 191 had high calcium levels at some point. The good news? Most of these cases were just brief spikes and not a sign that MGUS was turning into something worse. In fact, high calcium levels were usually due to other reasons, like thyroid issues or different kinds of cancer. So, if you're one of the folks with MGUS and your calcium levels are high, it's likely nothing to do with your MGUS getting worse. The causes are pretty much the same as for anyone else. Doctors should handle these cases just like they would for anyone with high calcium levels.
