Michael Douglas Talks Democracy, Movies, and Retirement

Karlovy Vary, Czech RepublicSat Jul 05 2025

Michael Douglas attended the Karlovy Vary Film Festival to present a restored version of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." During his visit, he shared his concerns about the state of democracy in the U.S.

Concerns About Democracy

Douglas believes that the U.S. is at risk of becoming an autocracy. He emphasized that democracy is fragile and requires constant protection. He also criticized the current political landscape, stating that it has become too focused on making money.

Despite his worries, Douglas did not want to delve too deeply into political discussions. He mentioned that the news speaks for itself and expressed his concern, encouraging others to be concerned as well.

Honoring a Classic Film

The festival honored the classic film and its connection to the town. Miloš Forman, the director, was a significant supporter of the festival. Douglas and other contributors to the film received awards for their contributions to cinema.

Reflecting on the Past

Douglas reminisced about the early days of the festival, calling it special to honor a movie from 50 years ago. He reflected on the great films of 1976 and wondered if there have been any movies as good in the last 20 years.

Saul Zaentz, the producer, agreed and stated that he wouldn't remake the film. Instead, he is working on a TV series based on the book, told from a different character's perspective.

Upcoming Projects

Zaentz is also working on other projects, including one about border agents helping a dying immigrant. He hopes to film it soon. Additionally, he is working on a TV adaptation of "The English Patient," but notes that it is too expensive at the moment.

Health and Future Plans

Douglas discussed his health, revealing that he had stage 4 throat cancer but is now doing better. He hasn't acted since 2022 and does not plan to act again. With nearly 60 years of acting experience, he wants to take a break. However, he is not completely retired and might act again if something special comes up. For now, he is happy to support his wife's career.
