Michigan is in for a snowy Saturday, with some changes to the original forecast. More areas are now under winter storm warnings, including parts of the Sunrise Side shoreline and Mackinac County. The Thumb and eastern Detroit area are under a winter weather advisory, expecting slightly less snow.
The storm's timeline has shifted a bit. Warnings will last from 10 a. m. to 1 p. m. Sunday in most places, but the southwest corner will have lake-effect snow until 7 p. m. Sunday. The storm's track has also changed slightly, with most of southeast Michigan now expected to see all snow, instead of a mix of precipitation. However, this could change back to a mix, so keep an eye on updates.
Snow is expected to start light and pick up throughout the day. By 5 p. m. , most of Lower Michigan will be seeing snow, making roads slick in the evening. By 8 p. m. , the entire state will be in snow, with heavier snowfall in the south.
Snowfall amounts have stayed consistent. Most areas can expect 4 to 7 inches, with the southwest quarter seeing 6 to 11 inches due to lake-effect snow. The western half of the state, including Grand Rapids and Traverse City, could see up to 10 inches. The Detroit area should expect 3 to 5 inches.
There's a bit of good news for Sunday. Temperatures may warm up to around 33 degrees in the southern half of the state, improving road conditions in the afternoon. However, the lake-effect snow belt at the south end of Lake Michigan will still see heavy snow bursts.
To stay safe, it's best to leave early or delay your return until after 3 p. m. Sunday. Always remember that forecasts can change, so stay updated and be prepared.
