Michigan's Wild Weather: Snow, Cold, and a Glimpse of Warmth

Michigan is in for a weather rollercoaster. Right now, the western part of the state is getting hit hard with heavy snow and strong winds. Places like Grand Rapids and Traverse City are under winter storm warnings. Meanwhile, the east is dealing with less snow but still dangerous conditions due to blowing snow and freezing temps.
A weird weather thing called a lake-induced mesoscale vortex is causing heavy snowfall. It's like a mini storm that forms when cold air spins over the warmer Great Lakes. This vortex is expected to dump 3 to 6 inches of snow by tonight and up to 12 inches by tomorrow morning in some areas.
Drivers on I-94, especially between Jackson and Ann Arbor, need to be extra careful. A lake effect snow band could suddenly cover the highway with ice, making driving hazardous. It's not a constant thing, but when it hits, it can create sudden icy patches.
More snow is on the way. Starting Tuesday night, another system will bring 1 to 4 inches of snow across the state. Wednesday might be even worse than today for driving in places like Ann Arbor, Detroit, Flint, and Saginaw.
Brace for extreme cold this weekend. The polar vortex is pushing down, bringing temps 10 to 15 degrees below zero. Some areas might not even reach zero during the day on Friday and Saturday. Wind gusts of 40 mph will make it feel even colder, and salt won't work well on roads when temps drop below 15 degrees.
There's a light at the end of the tunnel. Early February might bring a break from the deep freeze. Weather models suggest a shift that could push temps above freezing for the first time in a while. This aligns with the usual rise in temps around February 1st, as the sun gets stronger and climate trends push the seasonal warm-up earlier.
