The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has started gathering information about Microsoft's cloud business practices, following numerous complaints. Microsoft has been accused of using unfair tactics to keep customers tied to its Azure platform. Some of these tactics include making Office 365 products incompatible with other cloud services and imposing high exit fees. The FTC is also looking into Microsoft's minimum spending contracts, which offer significant discounts but require companies to commit to a certain spending level.
Competitors of Microsoft have voiced their concerns to the FTC, stating that Microsoft is forcing customers to use Azure by blocking third-party cloud services. These practices are seen as anticompetitive, aiming to hinder Microsoft's rivals in the cloud market. The FTC's interest in this matter comes as Lina Khan, the youngest FTC chair, is nearing the end of her tenure. Khan has been known for her tough stance against big tech companies and their anticompetitive behaviors.
The cloud market is a lucrative one, with big players like Microsoft, Amazon, and Google competing for a larger share. Earlier in 2023, Google accused Microsoft of abusing its dominant position in the European cloud sector, which led to a heated exchange between the two tech giants. Microsoft denied the allegations and countered by accusing Google of funding lobbying efforts against it.
The change in presidential administrations could affect the pace of the FTC's investigation, but the fight against tech monopolies has bipartisan support in Washington. This means there's a chance the investigation will continue even after Khan's term ends.
