Mid-Missouri's Freezing Fever
Fri Feb 21 2025
Mid-Missouri has been experiencing some seriously chilly temperatures. It's not just cold, it's record-breaking cold. Two records have been shattered. The first one was for the coldest high temperature in the afternoon. The old record was 15 degrees set way back in 1929. But yesterday, the temperature only reached 13 degrees. That's a new low. The overnight temperatures were even more shocking. The previous record low was 0 degrees, also from 1929. This time, the temperature dropped to -6 degrees. That's 6 degrees colder than the old record. This cold snap has meteorologists on high alert. They're keeping a close eye on the weather to see if more records will be broken tonight.
The winter season in Mid-Missouri runs from December to the end of February. We're heading towards the end of February now. So far, the snowfall has been pretty average. The seasonal average is 14. 9 inches, and we've already seen 15 inches. That's just a tiny bit more than the average.
The good news is that this extreme cold and snow is starting to ease up. Looking ahead to the next 6-10 days, the forecast is showing warmer than average conditions. This means that the freezing temperatures might be over.
This cold snap is a reminder of how unpredictable weather can be. It's also a chance to appreciate the warmth when it returns. So, bundle up and stay warm, because spring is just around the corner.
