Migrant Youth Seek Pregabalin for Euphoria and Trauma Relief

French-speaking European countriesSat Oct 17 2026

Young migrants are increasingly turning to pregabalin without a doctor’s approval. The medication, designed for nerve pain and anxiety, is being used for a quick high or to dull emotional scars. This shift is most noticeable among people from Maghreb countries, especially Algeria.

The typical user is a young man from Algeria who often feels left out of society. Economic hardship pushes him to leave his home and seek a new life. French‑speaking nations become the preferred destination because of language links and family networks.

He usually starts taking the drug back in his origin country and keeps the habit after moving. The goal is to feel euphoria or to manage past trauma while adjusting to a foreign environment. The pattern shows a continuation of use across borders.

Research that outlines these users’ profiles, reasons, and health impacts is still limited. A recent scoping review searched academic databases and grey literature to fill that gap. The findings aim to help services understand and support this growing group.
