Minecraft Movie: A Global Hit in Early Days
MexicoSat Apr 05 2025
Minecraft has made a splash at the international box office. By Thursday, it raked in $18. 4 million across 55 countries. This figure excludes China, where it opened on Friday with a massive $6. 6 million, the biggest opening for a Hollywood film in China this year.
The movie's success is not limited to China. It has also performed well in the Middle East, bringing in $4. 4 million by Thursday. This includes preview screenings that started on Monday, timed with Eid celebrations. The movie has also taken the top spot in various Asian markets and Latin America. In Latin America, it holds a 90% share of the top five films, marking the best debut in the region for 2025 and the best ever for Jack Black, excluding animated films.
Mexico was a standout performer on Thursday, earning $1. 9 million. This outpaced several other popular films, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Kung Fu Panda 4, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Germany followed with $1. 7 million, also seeing a strong start. France opened with $1. 3 million on Wednesday, the best start of 2025 in that country. Australia and Brazil also saw impressive numbers, with $1. 1 million and $759, 000 respectively.
The top-performing markets by Thursday were Mexico, Germany, the UAE, France, and Saudi Arabia. China's performance was particularly notable. It opened with a bang, taking 30% of the market share on a busy Friday. This performance puts it as the second-biggest import of the year in China, behind only a few major titles.
The movie's success is a testament to its widespread appeal. It has outperformed several other films in various markets, showing that it has a strong draw for audiences. The numbers are impressive, but they also raise questions. How will the movie fare in the long run? Will it maintain its momentum, or will it fade away like so many other blockbusters? Only time will tell.
