Minneapolis Gang Members Facing Severe Charges: A Federal Crackdown
Minneapolis, USAThu Oct 31 2024
In a significant move by federal authorities, 11 people allegedly linked to the Lows gang in Minneapolis have been indicted on serious charges, including murder and drug trafficking. The indictments are part of a broader federal operation aimed at dismantling violent street gangs, which has led to over 90 people being charged since its start in 2023. Some of the accused are suspected of involvement in fatal shootings that killed five people, and all 11 are charged with conspiracy.
The Lows gang, active for nearly two decades in north Minneapolis, is known for its violent tactics and control over neighborhoods. They're accused not only of murders but also of trafficking fentanyl and possessing illegal firearms. U. S. Attorney Andrew Luger emphasized that the gang's actions have devastated families and communities, and the indictment is a step towards weakening their grip.
The federal crackdown utilizes the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) statute, which allows authorities to target the criminal organizations themselves rather than just individual members. Traditionally, Minnesota prosecuted gang-related crimes individually, but the shift to dismantling entire organizations is changing the approach.
Recently, three other individuals involved in this federal operation were convicted under the RICO statute. This signifies a significant change in how gang-related crimes are being tackled in Minnesota.
