Minnesota's Star Power Shines in Conference Finals
Minnesota, USAThu May 15 2025
The Minnesota Timberwolves have secured their spot in the Western Conference Finals for the second year in a row. They managed to beat the Golden State Warriors in a decisive Game 5, winning 121-110. The Warriors were missing their star player, Steph Curry, who has been sidelined since Game 1 due to a hamstring injury.
The Warriors' coach, Steve Kerr, did not blame Curry's absence for their loss. He acknowledged that injuries are common in the playoffs and chose to focus on the Timberwolves' strong performance instead. Kerr refused to discuss Curry's impact, emphasizing that the Timberwolves deserved the win.
Julius Randle has been a standout player for Minnesota. He scored 29 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and dished out five assists in the final game. Randle, who joined the Timberwolves this season in a major trade, has been a key player in their playoff run. He is averaging nearly 24 points per game in the playoffs and has scored 20 or more points in eight of their 10 postseason games.
Anthony Edwards, another Timberwolves star, praised Randle's versatility and leadership. Edwards highlighted Randle's ability to create opportunities for his teammates, control the game's tempo, and even improve his defense. Edwards finished the game with 22 points, seven rebounds, 12 assists, and three blocks.
Other notable performers for Minnesota included Rudy Gobert with 17 points, Mike Conley with 16, Jaden McDaniels with 14, and Donte DiVincenzo with 13 points off the bench. The Timberwolves built a 25-point lead in the third quarter and held off a late Warriors surge to secure the win.
The Warriors had standout performances from Brandin Podziemski, who scored a career-high 28 points, and Jonathan Kuminga, who added 26 off the bench. Jimmy Butler, known for his clutch playoff performances, had a disappointing night with just 17 points on 4-of-11 shooting. Butler, who earned the nickname "Playoff Jimmy" for his past performances, struggled this postseason due to a pelvis injury sustained in the first round.
Minnesota's next challenge will be against either the Oklahoma City Thunder or the Denver Nuggets. The Thunder currently lead their series 3-2, with Game 6 set to decide the matchup. This is a rematch for the Timberwolves, who lost to the Dallas Mavericks in last year's Western Conference Finals.
In other playoff news, the Boston Celtics avoided elimination with a 127-102 win against the New York Knicks. Without their star player, Jayson Tatum, who underwent surgery for a ruptured Achilles, Derrick White stepped up with 34 points, including seven three-pointers. The Celtics will look to extend their season in Game 6 at Madison Square Garden.
