Missile from Yemen Hits Tel Aviv, Israel's Defenses Fail
Tel Aviv, IsraelSat Dec 21 2024
Late on Friday night, a missile from Yemen found its way to Tel Aviv, Israel's bustling city. The missile touched down in the southern Jaffa area, making it a rare event given Israel's strong air defenses. Sirens alerted residents, but attempts to intercept the missile failed. The result? Over a dozen people suffered minor injuries, mostly from broken glass. Thankfully, no one died.
Israel's military and the Houthis, an Iran-backed group in Yemen, both confirmed the event. The Houthis claimed they hit an Israeli military target with a hypersonic missile called "Palestine 2, " and that Israel's defenses couldn't catch it.
Israeli emergency services reported that 16 people were hurt by shattered glass nearby. Another 14 were treated for minor injuries due to sheltering, and seven experienced panic attacks. A local resident, Beth Shahai, 69, shared her scare, explaining she heard the sirens but the missile exploded fast.
This isn't Israel's first brush with attacks since its conflict with Hamas started last year. They've faced missiles and rockets from Iran-backed groups like Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen, along with direct attacks from Iran. Almost all these projectiles have been shot down by Israel's defenses.
The Houthis have also targeted ships in the Red Sea, citing the Gaza conflict as their reason. The group, along with Hamas and Hezbollah, is part of an Iran-led alliance that's been striking Israel and its allies since last year's war began.
