Mississippi is in for a rough ride this weekend. The National Weather Service has put the whole state on alert for severe weather. The main concern is strong winds that could cause damage. But there's also a chance of quick tornadoes and small hail.
The storms are expected to start in the northwest part of the state around 7 p. m. on Saturday. They'll then move southeast through the night and into Sunday morning. Most of Mississippi is under a Level 2 risk, which is considered a slight risk.
In addition to possible tornadoes, wind gusts could reach 60 mph. Rainfall could add up to 2 inches. There's also a slight chance of pea-sized hail. Some areas, like Pearl River, Stone, George, Hancock, Harrison, and Jackson counties, are under a Level 1 warning. This means the same threats, but on a smaller scale.
After the storms pass, Mississippi will see cooler weather. Temperatures could drop into the 40s by Monday morning.
The forecast for Jackson, MS, includes a chance of showers today and tonight. Tonight's storms could bring heavy rainfall. Sunday is expected to be partly sunny, with a high near 74. Sunday night will be clear, with a low around 47.
The forecast for Hattiesburg, MS, is similar. There's a chance of showers today and tonight. Tonight's storms could also bring heavy rainfall. Sunday will start with a chance of showers and thunderstorms. It will then gradually clear, with a high near 79. Sunday night will be clear, with a low around 48.
