Moms' eating habits may shape baby's genetic health
Northeast BrazilThu Jun 18 2026
A recent study dug into how what pregnant women eat can mess with their baby’s DNA from the start. Researchers tracked 209 women in their third trimester in Northeast Brazil, checking their meals, weight, and lifestyle. They found most moms weren’t eating enough of key nutrients like magnesium or folic acid. Instead, their diets were heavy on protein and fat, but short on what their bodies really needed.
The study split the women into three groups based on their nutrition. One group struggled the most with malnutrition, another had mild issues, and the third ate more balanced diets. Surprisingly, the moms’ own DNA damage didn’t change much between groups—but their babies’ DNA did. Babies born to moms in the first two groups showed more genetic abnormalities than those whose moms ate better.
The research used mouth swabs to check DNA damage in both moms and babies. It turns out moms who didn’t get enough calories or nutrients had a bigger chance of passing on genetic issues to their newborns. This suggests poor nutrition during pregnancy doesn’t just affect mom—it could set back a baby’s health right from day one.
