Mom's Fitness Boost: Community Sessions for Active Families

Community-based programs, United StatesFri Oct 09 2026

Many moms face tough obstacles when trying to stay active. These challenges often come from money issues, family responsibilities, or lack of safe spaces. That's why researchers created a program called MOMs to help. The idea was simple: bring exercise right where kids play sports.

The program brought groups together for hands-on activities. Female fitness coaches led the sessions during kids' practice times. One pilot ran for six weeks, while the second lasted eight weeks. Extra support came through phone calls and printed guides to keep everyone motivated.

Researchers talked to nineteen people who joined either pilot. Most were Black or Hispanic and earned less than forty thousand dollars a year. They mostly liked what they experienced. Feeling more motivated to move was a big win. But some struggled with busy schedules and bad weather.

Looking at how people felt helped shape future plans. Accountability mattered a lot. Making the space easy to reach was another key factor. The team learned that small tweaks could make the program work better for more families.
