Moms in the West Bank Caring for Kids with Cancer

West Bank, PalestineThu Nov 05 2026

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia is the most common cancer found in children worldwide. Treatment takes a long time and is very intense. It puts a lot of stress on families. In the West Bank, mothers usually become the main caregiver. A team of researchers set out to learn what these mothers go through.

The study included fifteen mothers. Their children were being treated at Beit Jala Governmental Hospital. Each mother took part in an interview. The interviews were written down word for word. Experts then studied the text to find common ideas. They found five main themes with many smaller parts.

Many mothers felt shock when they heard the news. Some could not believe it. Others felt angry or sad. Some denied the situation at first. Political conditions added more trouble. Travel to the hospital was often hard. Closures made mothers feel alone and cut off.

Family life changed in big ways. Money became a major problem. Mothers had less time for their other children. The role of a mother shifted. Relationships with partners suffered. Daily routines fell apart. Still, some mothers said they grew closer to their sick child.

These mothers showed real strength. They relied on support from relatives and friends. Religious faith helped many stay hopeful. A positive outlook made a difference. But they still need more help. They asked for emotional support, better information, and money. Programs that help the whole family could improve things for everyone.
