Monarch Migration Celebration at Darden Towe Park

Charlottesville and Albemarle County recreation teams are partnering for a seasonal celebration. They want to mark the end of the local monarch season. The collaboration brings together staff from both departments. The event aims to give people a chance to learn while having fun.

Each autumn the orange‑black butterflies move through the region on their way to warmer Mexican forests. The migration usually peaks in late September. Residents often notice the bright wings in gardens and parks. Scientists track the journey to better understand climate impacts.

The free gathering is set for Sunday afternoon, running from three until seven at Darden Towe Park. No tickets are required. Parking is available nearby. Food trucks will offer snacks and drinks throughout the evening.

Organizers say the program mixes cultural traditions from Mexico with lessons about nature and activities for all ages. There will be music, crafts, and guided walks. The goal is to teach and entertain at the same time. Volunteers are welcome to help with set‑up and clean‑up.
