The Trump administration has decided to pause $10 billion in funds for social services and child care in five states led by Democrats. This move, reported first by the New York Post, affects California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, and New York. The Health and Human Services (HHS) department claims, without solid proof, that these funds might have been misused.
The freeze includes over $7 billion for cash assistance to needy families, more than $2 billion for child care, and around $870 million for social services. An HHS spokesperson stated that the administration wants to ensure taxpayer money is used properly and that these states follow the law. However, the states involved have not been officially notified about these cuts.
Colorado and Illinois have both said they haven't received any notification from the federal government about the funding freeze. They expressed concern and confusion, with Illinois calling it a politically motivated action that leaves states with more questions than answers.
This news follows a recent pause in federal funding for child care programs in Minnesota. The freeze came after a YouTube video by a content creator claimed, with little evidence, that Somali-run child care centers were committing fraud. The Department of Homeland Security and FBI have increased their presence in Minnesota, and federal funding for child care there was frozen. The Trump administration also announced plans to deploy 2, 000 federal agents as part of an immigration crackdown. Investigations into alleged wrongdoing are ongoing.
There is no evidence to suggest that the other four states have faced widespread fraud. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand from New York criticized the funding freeze, calling it immoral and accusing the administration of political retribution. She argued that this move harms the neediest Americans and has nothing to do with fraud.
