Winter has arrived with full force in the United States, and Montana is feeling the brunt of it. The National Weather Service has issued a "Blizzard Warning" for parts of the state, adding to the existing "Winter Storm Warnings. "
The first warning came from the NWS Missoula office on Tuesday. It predicted heavy snow and damaging winds, with accumulations ranging from 2 to 5 inches in the valleys and 8 to 12 inches at higher elevations. Winds were expected to gust up to 60 mph in lower areas and 70 mph in higher terrain.
This warning covered several areas, including Essex, Marias Pass, and Glacier National Park, and was set to remain in effect until 11 p. m. local time on Wednesday.
On Wednesday morning, the NWS Great Falls office issued another "Winter Storm Warning. " This one was in effect until 11 p. m. that night and covered the Continental Divide along the Rocky Mountain Front. The warning predicted 3 to 8 inches of snow in Marias Pass and higher amounts in Glacier National Park. Winds were expected to gust over 70 mph at times, making travel difficult and dangerous.
The "Blizzard Warning" was also announced on Wednesday morning. It was in effect from 4 p. m. that day until 6 a. m. Thursday and covered over a dozen towns in northeast Montana. While only 1 to 3 inches of snow were expected, winds gusting up to 70 mph could cause significant problems. The NWS advised against non-emergency travel, warning of slippery road conditions, drifting snow, and areas of whiteout conditions.
