More Phones to Get Key Security Boost with Android 16

The upcoming Android 16 update is set to bring a significant security enhancement to a wider range of Android devices. This feature, known as Identity Check, is currently exclusive to Pixel and Samsung phones. It adds an extra layer of security by requiring biometric authentication for changing key security settings when the device is not in a trusted location. Smartphones are prime targets for thieves due to the valuable personal data they hold. To tackle this issue, Google introduced several anti-theft features last year. One of these, Identity Check, ensures that even if a thief knows the phone's passcode, they can't access sensitive apps. This feature is part of Android's broader theft protection suite, found under Settings > Google > Theft Protection. Identity Check was first rolled out for Pixel phones in December 2024 and for Samsung Galaxy phones with the One UI 7 update. Although other manufacturers haven't announced plans to adopt this feature, it has been spotted on the OnePlus 13 after installing the Android 16 beta. This suggests that more devices will likely support Identity Check with the Android 16 update. When enabled, Identity Check mandates biometric verification before allowing changes to critical security settings or access to saved passwords and sensitive data. This measure is particularly effective outside of the user's trusted locations, adding an extra barrier against unauthorized access. The feature's implementation requires modifications to the biometric prompt code, which is why it necessitates an OS update. Android 15 QPR1 was the first version to fully support Identity Check. Pixel phones received this update in December 2024, while Samsung implemented it in their One UI 7 release. Other manufacturers might choose to include this feature in their Android 16 updates, making Identity Check more accessible. Most Android 16 devices should support this feature, as it only requires a class 3 secure biometric. For users with Android phones from brands other than Google or Samsung, it's worth checking for the Identity Check feature after updating to Android 16. Although it won't be enabled by default, manually activating it can significantly bolster device security. This update is a step forward in protecting users' personal data from potential threats.
