You might have heard of the chikungunya virus (CHIKV). It's a virus spread by mosquitoes, and its cases have been on the rise globally due to changes in climate and increased travel. One of the mosquitoes that can carry this virus is called Aedes albopictus, and it's not native to places like Central Europe. Scientists wanted to know if these mosquitoes could still spread CHIKV in colder areas.
They tested Ae. albopictus at different temperatures, from 15°C to 24°C. Surprisingly, these mosquitoes were quite good at carrying the virus. However, when the temperature dropped, they didn't move around much. This means they might not be as effective at spreading the virus in colder regions.
It's interesting to note that while these mosquitoes can carry the virus, their ability to move around and potentially spread it is reduced in cooler temperatures. This is something to consider when thinking about the risk of CHIKV in places like Central Europe.
